Nigeria NRS e-invoicing: are you ready, and which provider?

Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) e-invoicing went live for medium taxpayers on July 1, 2026, with penalties expected from early 2027. This page gives you the reported dates, a taxpayer band check, and a provider vetting checklist. It runs in your browser and saves nothing on a server.

Checklist and templates, not tax or legal advice. We are not affiliated with the NRS. Dates come from press and adviser summaries of NRS notices, and can change. Confirm on the NRS e-invoicing portal and with a qualified adviser.

Source: Sovos, Feb 26, 2026, summarizing the NRS public notice. Also see KPMG. BusinessDay (Oct 14, 2026) says penalties for medium firms are scheduled from the first quarter of 2027, so sources word the start differently. The NRS says enforcement begins only after engagement, pilot and post go live review phases are complete for each band.

What the penalty is reported to be

BusinessDay reports that bypassing the system attracts a penalty of ₦200,000 plus 100 percent of the tax due, with interest at the monetary policy rate plus two percentage points, and that businesses also risk losing input VAT credits on non compliant invoices. Larger customers may reject invoices that are not compliant. Source: BusinessDay, Oct 14, 2026. Check the Nigeria Tax Administration Act and the NRS for the legal text.

The transition ask. On October 14, 2026 the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged the NRS to grant a six month penalty free transition for firms that are not ready. That is a request. We found no NRS decision to grant it, so do not plan around it.

How to vet a provider

The NRS FAQ explains the roles: a System Integrator (SI) connects your software to the e-invoicing system, and an Access Point Provider (APP) handles secure transmission to and from NRS. Invoices are structured data (UBL 2.1), validated by NRS, given an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a cryptographic stamp. NRS community FAQ.
